In March 2024, the district court convicted a now 64-year-old Swiss man in a circumstantial evidence trial - and acquitted a now 60-year-old Italian man.
The case was triggered by the discovery of the body of a 27-year-old Egyptian man in Lake Barchet in December 2007. It was not until 2022 that new evidence led to the trail of the possible perpetrators. Statements from undercover investigators incriminated the Swiss man in particular.
He is defending himself against the verdict before the High Court. The trial began on Thursday with a brief questioning of the accused. However, he did not comment on the accusations made by the prosecution. His defense lawyer then demanded an acquittal. The central charge had not been proven, he argued.
