People in several cities in Brazil have demonstrated against the high tariffs imposed on the country by Donald Trump. Demonstrators set fire to dolls of the US President.
Anti-Trump protests took place on Friday (local time) in the capital Brasília and in the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Placards read "Brazil belongs to the Brazilians". US flags and fake dollar bills were also set alight, as reported by the AFP news agency.
The demonstrators were expressing their anger at Trump's politically motivated decision to impose a 50 percent tariff on Brazilian exports. They were also protesting against sanctions imposed by Washington against Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes.
On Friday, Trump signed a decree increasing the tariffs of ten percent already in force for the South American country to 50 percent as of August 6. The White House justified this with an alleged "politically motivated persecution" of the ultra-right Brazilian ex-president Jair Bolsonaro.
Trump threatened the 50 percent tariffs three weeks ago and spoke of a "witch hunt" against his political ally Bolsonaro. The far-right politician, who was Brazil's head of state from 2019 to 2022, is facing trial in his home country for an alleged coup attempt. Bolsonaro faces up to 40 years in prison.
On Wednesday, the USA announced sanctions against Judge Moraes, whom it holds responsible for the "unlawful witch hunt" against Bolsonaro.
