The Danish government wants to abolish taxes on coffee and chocolate to ease the burden on households. A measure has been chosen "that will have an immediate effect for the Danes", said Deputy Prime Minister Troels Lund Poulsen on TV2.
The citizens would immediately feel that they had more money at their disposal, he said. The government expects the abolition to result in a loss of revenue equivalent to 321 million euros. Without the tax, a packet of coffee would cost the equivalent of 66 cents less than before, according to the authorities.

According to official statistics, the price of chocolate in Denmark rose by 25.3 percent year-on-year in July. The price of coffee rose by 35.5 percent. Overall food prices rose by 6.5 percent in July compared to the previous year.
