Deutsche Bahn (DB) says it has once again filled a record number of trainee positions this year. Starting in the fall, 6,000 junior staff will begin their jobs at DB.

This is around 500 more positions than in the previous year and most of the new recruits are being trained as train drivers, the German company announced on Friday. Deutsche Bahn had already set a new record in 2019, when 4,200 trainees were taken on. This number has increased every year since then, the company explained. "On the one hand, we have to make savings, but at the same time we will continue to invest massively in our junior staff," said DB Board Member for Human Resources Martin Seiler. He assured the trainees that they would be taken on if they passed their final exams.

Apprentices selected from 120,000 applicants

The 6,000 new apprentices were selected from 120,000 applicants, DB explained further. The number of applicants was also 15 percent higher than the previous year and therefore higher than ever before. Around 900 prospective train drivers, almost as many train traffic controllers and 750 trainee electronics technicians alone are due to start work at the Group from September 2. In total, DB is currently training around 15,000 people. It is one of the largest training providers in Germany. The Group also plans to recruit around 25,000 new employees this year.
