The four-year-old black and tan female dog prevailed against almost 2,500 other dogs and more than 200 breeds at the Madison Square Garden event arena on Tuesday (local time), as reported by US broadcaster CNN.
She was the 42nd female winner in the "Best in show" category and the fifth Doberman in the history of this continuously held "oldest dog competition" in the USA. The Westminster dog show was held for the 150th time.
The winning dog in the "Best in show" category regularly becomes a star in the USA. According to CNN, dog handler Andy Linton, who presented "Penny" in the arena in front of an audience and won this prize with a Doberman in 1989, was delighted: "She's the greatest Doberman I've ever seen."
The Dobermann was bred in Germany and bears the name of its first known breeder, Friedrich Louis Dobermann, as the Dobermann-Verein Deutschland writes on its website.
According to this, the breeder is said to have mated a female dog with Pinschers, among others. In English, the name "Doberman Pinscher" still refers to these historical origins.
