In Donald Trump's opinion, the US dollar has not lost too much value recently - on the contrary. The US President claimed that the national currency had performed "extremely well".

When asked by a journalist whether he was worried about the fall in the value of the dollar, Trump replied: "No, I think it's great." He referred to the deals that the USA was making, without giving details.

After Trump's statements became known, the euro rose sharply against the US dollar. One euro fetched a good 1.20 dollars. Gold also rose sharply against the US dollar, reaching a record high.

Trump cited the devaluation of the Japanese yen and the Chinese renminbi as positive examples - the respective governments would do everything possible to push down the value of the national currency. However, this is more likely to be a consequence of the different economic and interest rate policies.

Hope for economic growth

Trump has already shown himself to be open to a weaker dollar in the past because he hopes it will create opportunities for more economic growth. With a strong dollar, no business could be done and no foreign tourists would come to the USA, he said. However, Trump conceded that a strong dollar would help against inflation.

In principle, a weak dollar can stimulate demand from abroad and thus lead to higher exports in the short term, thereby boosting economic growth. However, currencies that are too weak can also be problematic in the fight against inflation: Because for Americans, this means, among other things, that they have to put more money on the table for imported products and that traveling abroad becomes more expensive.
