Dozens more people were taken to hospitals after consuming the alcohol in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, local media such as the television channel NDTV reported on Thursday, citing the authorities. Those affected were suffering from symptoms such as stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea.

The police had seized many liters of the adulterated drink, which according to laboratory tests contained toxic methanol. Several suspects were arrested in this connection, the head of government of the affected state, Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin, announced on Platform X. Several officials who had not prevented the crime had been suspended or transferred.

In India, hundreds of mostly poor people die every year because they drank adulterated liquor. This is cheaper than commercially produced liquor but, as in the current case, is often laced with methanol or other substances that can lead to severe poisoning.
