The institute fears that more than 10,000 people may have died in Myanmar and the other affected regions. So far, the military leadership in Myanmar has reported at least 144 dead and more than 730 injured.

The USGS had measured a magnitude of 7.7 at a depth of 10 kilometers during the quake near Myanmar's second largest city, Mandalay. The tremors were also felt in Thailand, China and Vietnam. Injuries and damage to buildings were also reported in the Chinese province of Yunnan. According to state media, the People's Republic sent a small disaster control team with special equipment across the border to Myanmar.

In Thailand, three deaths have been officially confirmed so far. According to media reports, however, up to ten dead have now been recovered. In addition, 101 people are missing in the megacity of Bangkok alone.
