In the Iranian metropolis of Tehran, an earthquake has woken residents from their sleep in the middle of the night. The German Research Institute for Geosciences (GFZ) in Potsdam gave the magnitude of the quake in the early hours of Sunday morning as 4.7. It occurred south-east of the capital at a depth of around ten kilometers.

There were initially no reports of damage or casualties. According to reports, the quake was also felt in the pilgrimage city of Ghom, around 150 kilometers from Tehran.

The region, where the Arabian, Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, is subject to repeated severe tremors. According to the United Nations, more than 1,500 people were killed in a devastating series of earthquakes in neighboring Afghanistan in autumn 2023.
