According to the US earthquake observatory USGS, the quake was registered off New Zealand's South Island at 2.43 pm (local time). The epicenter was located 160 kilometers from the town of Riverton at a depth of ten kilometers.

The originally recorded magnitude of the quake was initially given as 7.0 and later downgraded.

"No threat to the country"

The New Zealand Disaster Management Authority advised residents to avoid nearby coastal areas due to the risk of "strong and unusual currents". However, "no threat to the country is expected", it said.

New Zealand lies on two tectonic plates, which is why earthquakes are frequent there. In 2011, a severe quake with a magnitude of 6.3 killed 185 people in Christchurch, the largest city on New Zealand's South Island. Numerous buildings collapsed at the time, burying dozens of people underneath them. The tragedy was followed by a lengthy reconstruction process.
