The epicenter of the quake on Saturday morning (local time) was at a depth of ten kilometers, according to the US earthquake monitoring station USGS.

In the meantime, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned of possible tsunami waves between one and three meters high. The center later declared that the tsunami danger from the earthquake had passed.

The effects of an earthquake depend on the strength, depth and location of the quake, as the Swiss Seismological Service of ETH Zurich writes on its website. Just a week ago, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake caused severe devastation in Myanmar and Thailand. According to official figures, the death toll in Myanmar, which was particularly affected, had recently risen to more than 3,000.
