A resident of the provincial capital of Mazar-i-Sharif told the state broadcaster RTA that he had never felt such tremors in the city before. He himself had broken his leg after jumping out of the window of his house because of the quake.

According to the news agency, there was also damage to the historic Blue Mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif. A video from the Afghan news channel Tolonews shows debris on the ground around the building.

As the news channel also reported, citing an official spokesperson, around 800 houses were destroyed or damaged in the province of Badakhshan.

Damaged power lines

According to the US earthquake observatory USGS, the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.3 and occurred at a depth of 28 kilometers. As residents of Kabul reported to the German Press Agency (dpa), tremors were also felt in the capital.

According to the national energy supply company, there was damage to power lines in the north of the country, leading to power cuts in several provinces. There were also problems with the power supply in Kabul.

The spokesman for the ruling Taliban, Sabihullah Mujahid, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims on the online platform X. Rescue workers have been dispatched to the affected areas.

There are repeated severe earthquakes in the region where the Arabian, Indian and Eurasian plates meet. It was only in September that a severe earthquake struck Afghanistan, killing more than 2,000 people.
