According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there have been no new cases in the 42 days since the last Ebola patient was discharged. This was the 16th Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo since 1976.

Since the beginning of September, a total of 64 cases of the disease had occurred in the Bulape district, a rural area with poor infrastructure, 53 of which were confirmed by laboratory tests. In 45 cases, the patients died of Ebola.

"Containing and ending this Ebola outbreak within three months is a remarkable achievement," said Mohamed Janabi, WHO Regional Director for Africa. More than 47,500 people have been vaccinated against Ebola to protect the population and health workers. Initially, contact persons of confirmed Ebola cases were vaccinated, later the vaccinations were extended within the region.

The disease transmitted by the Ebola virus is rare, but is often fatal in humans. Human-to-human transmission occurs primarily through direct contact with the blood or bodily fluids of a person who has contracted or died from Ebola.
