Eight children have been killed in a shooting incident in Shreveport in the southern US state of Louisiana. According to preliminary findings, those killed were between the ages of 1 and 14, Chris Bordelon of the local police department said at a press conference. "It's a very large crime scene where there are several deceased children." Most of the staff at his department had never seen a crime scene like this before.

According to Bordelon, the domestic dispute occurred shortly after 6.00 a.m. on Sunday morning (local time), during which a man of adult age shot. He had acted alone and is said to have been the father of some of the children who were killed. Two other people were injured.
The suspect then fled and was shot dead by the police after a chase. Bordelon emphasized that there was no longer any danger to the public. For the time being, there is no information on a motive and the investigation is ongoing.
Police chief announces more information soon
"I don't know what to say, my heart is heavy. I can't even begin to imagine how something like this could happen," said Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith. "I want the community to know that all of my resources are out here, that we're processing every piece of evidence and everything, and that at some point in the near future we'll be able to give more and more conclusive information about what exactly happened."
Shreveport, in northwest Louisiana, is close to the Texas border. With around 180,000 inhabitants, it is the third largest city in the state after New Orleans and Baton Rouge. "This is a tragic situation, perhaps the most tragic we've ever had in Shreveport. It's a terrible morning," said Mayor Tom Arceneaux at the press conference. His community is in mourning. "Now we're processing the information and it's in very good hands."
The governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, said in a statement that he and his wife were deeply saddened. "We are deeply grateful for the emergency responders and rescuers working tirelessly on the ground." Liz Murrill, the state's attorney general, said she was saddened by the "senseless loss of life". "I pray for all the victims and their family members in the face of this devastating violence."
