Injury-related hospitalizations rise sharply from December and peak in February in the tourist regions of Graubünden and Valais. According to an analysis, the number of cases in these two cantons is even twice as high as in the rest of the year.
In Graubünden, for example, 35 cases per day were registered in February in the years 2022 to 2024, compared to just over 18 cases in Valais. In September, this figure was 11 and 9 cases per day respectively. According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), the majority of patients come from other cantons or abroad.
Head injuries are the most common, accounting for a quarter of all cases. However, knee and shoulder injuries increase the most in the winter months.
