Emirates ordered 65 Boeing 777X jets worth 38 billion dollars at the start of the Dubai Airshow on Monday. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2027. The contract also includes 130 GE9X engines from General Electric.

Emirates CEO Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktum spoke of a "long-term commitment" that will secure hundreds of thousands of high-quality industrial jobs. Emirates, wholly owned by the Dubai government, was already the largest customer for the Boeing 777, having previously ordered 270 777Xs, ten freighter versions of the 777 and 35 Boeing 787s. The new order brings the order backlog to 315 wide-body aircraft.

The airline once again expressed its frustration at the repeated delays to the 777X program. Delivery had already been postponed from 2025 to 2026. "Some may have doubts about the high number of orders we have," said Al Maktum. "But every aircraft is firmly anchored in our growth plans."

Emirates is currently the most profitable airline in the world and made a profit of 2.9 billion dollars in the first half of the year. Boeing, meanwhile, is struggling with delivery problems as well as safety concerns and lawsuits following several accidents, including the Air India crash in June that claimed 260 lives.

Due to the delays, Emirates has had to modernize large parts of its existing fleet, including the A380, which is no longer in production. The new order also includes an option for larger 777X versions, which are still under development.
