According to the study, this would make environmental technology the second fastest growing sector after information technology. The consultants expect the global market volume to reach 7 trillion dollars by 2030.
The estimate is based on global sales of technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in eight economic sectors: Logistics and transportation, energy supply, climate impact adaptation - which includes, for example, flood protection - industry + construction, finance, recycling and waste management, agriculture and CO2/methane management.
EU falls behind despite ambitious climate targets
According to BCG, although the EU has set itself the world's most ambitious climate targets, it is gradually losing technological leadership to China. China is spending more money on environmental technology than other regions of the world, investing faster and consolidating its control over the value chains in green technology. "For the first time, the epicenter of innovation is shifting from the traditional Western centers to China," the study states.
As an example, the authors point to China's dominance in solar technology. According to the study, China spent 659 billion dollars on investments in the expansion of CO2-free energy supply last year, far more than Europe with 410 billion dollars and the USA with 310 billion. These figures come from the International Energy Agency (IEA) and include investments in new nuclear power plants in addition to the expansion of renewable energies.
