The consequences of the earthquake will be easier to assess with the support of the satellite service, as the responsible European Commission announced in the evening. The money is intended to help the people most affected.
The EU's humanitarian aid will be provided through carefully vetted organizations. Depending on the situation and needs on the ground, further EU aid should be mobilized if necessary.
According to the military leadership, at least 144 people have died in Myanmar, the country hardest hit by the earthquake in South East Asia. More than 730 people were injured. Deaths have also been reported in neighboring Thailand.
