The EU Commission has proposed an increase in EU tariffs on steel. In future, only half as much steel is to enter the EU market duty-free as before, explained EU Industry Commissioner Stéphane Séjourné in the online service X on Wednesday.

In addition, a 50 percent duty is to be imposed. Brussels wants to protect the European steel industry from cheaper competition from China.
Steel imports into the EU are duty-free up to a certain amount per year. Quotas apply to specific steel products for certain countries such as Switzerland. If the import quantity exceeds the respective upper limit, a duty of 25 percent is due, which the Commission now wants to double.
