An exact date for the introduction of the Entry/Exit System (EES) was not defined, as the Council of the European Union (EU) announced on Wednesday. This step is the responsibility of the European Commission. In addition, the approval of the European Parliament is still required.
The EES is intended to record biometric data such as fingerprints and a photo of the face of travelers planning a short stay of up to 90 days in the Schengen area. The system is intended to reduce overstaying, combat identity fraud and increase security.
Switzerland is a member of Schengen and will have to introduce EES at airports. The State Secretary for Migration, Vincenzo Mascioli, represented Switzerland at the Home Affairs Council.
