The EU Commission is demanding more information from the Asian shopping portal Shein about illegal goods and the recommendation systems on the platform. The authority issued a request for information based on the EU Digital Services Act.

Among other things, Shein must provide more information about the measures the portal uses to protect consumers, as the authority announced on Thursday. The Commission is also requesting details on the protection of users' personal data.

Brussels sets deadline for answers

According to the statement, Shein must provide the requested information by February 27. Based on the answers, the Commission will determine the next steps. If a company provides false, incomplete or misleading information or refuses to answer the questions, the authority could impose fines.

Shein is a fashion and sporting goods retailer that was founded in China and is now based in Singapore. It is considered one of the largest fashion companies in the world.

Digital Services Act: stricter rules for platforms

One of the aims of the Digital Services Act (DSA) is to ensure that platforms remove illegal content on their sites more quickly than before. In turn, it will be made easier for users to report such content. In principle, large services have to follow more rules than small ones. If they do not comply, they face severe penalties - including fines amounting to six percent of their total annual global turnover.

It was only on Wednesday that the EU Commission launched a separate investigation into Shein to examine whether the platform is taking sufficient action against abusive contract terms and unfair business practices. The investigation is being carried out by the national consumer protection authorities under the supervision of the Commission.
