According to the survey, the Greek islands in the southern Aegean, such as Santorini, Mykonos and Rhodes, had 117 tourist overnight stays per inhabitant in 2023. There was a similarly high intensity of tourism on the Ionian Islands around Corfu with 98 overnight stays.
Masses of tourists also meet comparatively few inhabitants in South Tyrol (68 overnight stays), on the Croatian Adriatic coast (67) and on the Balearic Islands in Spain (57). On the main island of Mallorca, there have recently been massive protests by residents against high rents and the cost of living.
In contrast, the statisticians found almost no tourists at all in some regions of Poland and Romania. There was barely one overnight stay per inhabitant over the course of the year.
In absolute figures, the Canary Islands, which also belong to Spain, were the most popular vacation destination in Europe in 2023 with 95.6 million overnight stays. However, with 43 overnight stays per capita, Tenerife and Co. only ranked 10th among all regions in terms of tourism intensity.
