The future of logging in could be revolutionized by everyday actions using smart devices in the home.

In the near future, everyday actions such as opening the fridge or turning on the music by touch or temperature could serve as an access method in smart homes. Researchers at ETH Zurich have developed innovative approaches to make this vision a reality.

The idea of logging into a smart home using familiar actions could make the laborious typing of passwords superfluous. This form of authentication offers considerable advantages, particularly for children and older people, as it is inconspicuous and simple, as ETH Zurich announced in its newsletter.

One example is a refrigerator that recognizes how a person operates the handle to grant access. However, the fridge remains locked to a four-year-old child in the same household.

Smart home appliances use data they collect via sensors to provide convenience and assistance to residents. These findings were published in a study that appeared in the Journal of the Association for Computing Machinery.

Innovative approaches in the smart home

The researchers investigated how everyday objects in the home can be used for authentication by setting up a smart kitchen and living room. The study participants were asked to think about how they would interact with the objects to log in.

The researchers then analyzed the patterns that emerged from the different login variants. The majority of participants found routine tasks that they considered unique to be the most appropriate. These included activities such as housework, laundry or switching devices on and off in a certain way. Aspects such as security, privacy and technical feasibility were also taken into account.
