Ex-dance group leader convicted of sexual offenses in Valais

The court found him guilty of sexual assault and attempted rape. The court found that the accused had a "serious responsibility" and a "complete lack of insight into the seriousness of his actions". The judges considered the events described, including an altercation with a former employee, to be proven.

However, the legal requirements for a conviction for deprivation of liberty and kidnapping were not met.

Public prosecutor Olivier Elsig had demanded an unconditional prison sentence of 24 months for the accused. In view of the circumstances, he argued that an unconditional sentence was "mandatory". The accused deserved "no leniency" as there were no signs of a change in behavior.

Spiritual and sexual group rituals

During the trial, Elsig said that the accused had built up a closed system within the "Interface" dance group, which he co-founded in 1990 and which was supported by the city of Sion. The accused "controlled everything" and introduced spiritual and sexual group rituals that were allegedly intended to serve the artistic work.

Several witnesses described the former director as a "guru". He allegedly tried to obtain sexual favors and used sexuality as an instrument of control.

The criminal investigation mainly concerned a former employee who had joined the dance group at the age of 16 and was the only private plaintiff. According to the public prosecutor's office, however, there are around 30 consistent witness statements regarding similar behavior.

Another charge related to an incident from 2011, in which the accused allegedly held a former employee in a room for several minutes and prevented her from leaving.

Appeal announced

The former head of the "Interface" dance group denied the allegations during the trial and spoke of "fabrications".

The verdict is not yet final. The defense has announced an appeal.
