According to the CH Media newspapers, Bolliger died of cancer. He had put his heart and soul into shaping Migros for decades, according to an obituary on the retail group's intranet.

Bolliger joined Migros in 1983. In 2005, the man from Aargau was appointed Chairman of the FMC Executive Board and thus became CEO of the "orange giant". He headed Switzerland's largest retailer until the end of 2017.

During his time in office, sales rose from 20.3 billion to 27.7 billion Swiss francs. The number of employees rose by almost 20,000, with the Migros Group employing over 100,000 people for the first time at the end of 2015.

The Aargau native's time in office saw the takeover of the discounter Denner, the fashion retailer Schild and Digitec-Galaxus, today's number one in Swiss online retail. The retail giant also ventured into completely new business areas with its investment in the health and fitness sector and the sale and rental of electric vehicles.
