The force of the explosion was enormous. In a statement on Friday, the Aargau cantonal police described it as a "scene of devastation".

Several window panes were shattered and the apartment door was torn from its anchoring. The interior of the apartment was littered with broken crockery and household items, and one wall was cracked.

Experts have now examined the statics of the apartment in the apartment building. They have had supports installed as a precaution. "The apartment remains uninhabitable for the time being," wrote the police. And: "The material damage cannot yet be quantified."

According to initial findings, the 55-year-old resident left the electric pump of a mattress running to compensate for a loss of air. The mattress then suddenly exploded. The cantonal police assume that the mattress was operated incorrectly, as they write in their press release. They are investigating the incident further.

The police found the resident uninjured on the outside. However, as he complained of discomfort, he was taken to hospital. After a check-up, he was able to leave the hospital on Thursday evening.
