A gas explosion in Russia's largest children's department store "Dyetski Mir" in Moscow has claimed the life of one person and injured three others, according to official reports. According to initial investigations, gas escaped from a gas cylinder on the third floor of the multi-storey department store in the center of the city and then exploded, the state agency Tass reported, citing the civil defense. The building was evacuated immediately after the incident.

Meanwhile, the authorities initiated criminal proceedings without saying who was being prosecuted. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin suspected a technical defect as the cause. A possible connection with the war in Ukraine was not initially under discussion.
