According to the news channel Skai, four female employees of the factory lost their lives; another woman is still missing and is being searched for in the rubble. According to the Greek Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, six people were also injured. The company affected, Violanta, is one of the largest confectionery manufacturers in Greece.
Accident during the night shift
According to the Greek broadcaster ERTNews, the accident occurred during the night shift on Monday. The roof and an outer wall of the building collapsed. The explosion could reportedly still be heard in the town of Trikala, around six kilometers away. Local media, citing security circles, reported that gas cylinders in the basement may have exploded for reasons that are as yet unexplained.
The cause of the accident will be investigated once the firefighting work has been completed, according to the fire department.
