The death toll after the explosion in the southern Iranian port city of Shahid Rajayei has risen again and now stands at 28. According to the state news agency Irna, more than 800 people were injured in the incident on Saturday - there is even talk of over 1,000 on the ground - and six people have been missing for 24 hours.

According to government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohadscherani, the hospitals in the province are overwhelmed with the treatment of the many patients, some of whom are seriously injured, and therefore many patients have to be transferred to other cities. The inhabitants of Hormuzgan province are still being called upon to donate blood for the injured.

President calls for complete clarification

The local authorities claim that the situation in the port city is back to normal, but the cause of the disaster is still being kept under wraps. Did the detonation occur in one of the port's fuel depots, as originally reported, or was it caused by the improper storage of rocket fuel in one of the depots? An act of sabotage by the arch-enemy Israel is also not being ruled out. President Massud Peseschkian has ordered a complete investigation into the accident and has sent a special team with two ministers to the site of the accident for this purpose.

Several heads of state, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, have expressed their condolences to Iran for the accident. According to the Kremlin, Russia also sent two civil defense aircraft with personnel to Iran to help with the firefighting efforts. Units of the Iranian air force and navy were also deployed as auxiliary troops.

The force of the detonation was so powerful that the shock wave could still be felt within a radius of 50 kilometers. It caused considerable damage to the port infrastructure and will affect the country's imports and exports for the unforeseeable future. Shahid Rajahi is the country's largest container port and part of the main port of Bandar Abbas in the province of Hormuzgan. More than a third of Iran's maritime trade is handled there.
