Fire Farmhouse in Hundwil AR burns down after being struck by lightning

A farmhouse in Hundwil burned down on Thursday. The house caught fire after being struck by lightning. No people or animals were injured. The house is no longer habitable.

Lightning struck the farmhouse outside Hundwil shortly before 9 a.m., wrote the Appenzell Ausserrhoden cantonal police in a statement. The residents were able to get outside and bring the farm animals to safety.

Due to the remote location of the fire site, the fire department had to build a long transport line for the extinguishing water supply, the police added. It was possible to prevent the fire from spreading to the barn and other parts of the building. The farmhouse sustained several hundred thousand francs worth of damage.
