After the collapse of a high-rise building under construction in Bangkok in the violent earthquake, rescue workers have reportedly found signs of life under the rubble. Several media reported, citing the authorities, that around 15 people were trapped in groups of three to seven under the mountain of steel and concrete.

The rescue teams were trying to get water and food to the people, the Thai radio station Thai PBS quoted the director of disaster control, Suriyachai Rawiwan, as saying. The problem, however, is that some people are trapped several meters below the surface. "We have about 72 hours to help them because that is the approximate time a person can survive without water and food," he said.
According to reports, the exact number of victims buried under the rubble remained unclear. People were waiting outside the site of the accident for news of their relatives. The police called on people to avoid the scene of the disaster so as not to hinder the rescue work with heavy equipment.
Violent quake the day before
The 30-storey high-rise building under construction collapsed on Friday after the severe earthquake in South East Asia. Videos showed people fleeing in panic from a swirling cloud of dust from the construction site.
The epicenter of the quake was in Myanmar. Both the German Georesearch Institute (GFZ) in Potsdam and the US Earthquake Observatory (USGS) have now put the magnitude at 7.7. In Thailand, a few deaths have been officially confirmed so far, while more than 100 are still missing. In neighboring Myanmar, the ruling military leadership has already confirmed more than 1,000 deaths.
