The tax increase corresponds to a price increase of around 40 centimes per retail packet for fine-cut tobacco for rolling cigarettes, tobacco products for heating and snus, as announced by the Federal Council on Wednesday. The increase is "moderate" and the government is not making full use of its legal powers to increase taxes.
The measure is being taken with the aim of contributing to a balanced federal budget for 2025. According to the communiqué, the Federal Council is expecting additional revenue of around CHF 45 million in 2025.
