The Federal Council is pursuing its plans for new reserve power plants. It is requesting a supplementary credit of CHF 50 million from Parliament. The money should be available from 2025.

The contracts for the existing three reserve power plants in Birr#AG, Cornaux#NE and Monthey#VS expire at the end of spring 2026. The federal government is currently negotiating with potential project developers about the construction of possible new reserve power plants. However, there is still no definitive legal basis for this.

Today, the operation of these fossil-fuelled plants is regulated in the Winter Reserve Ordinance, which is limited until the end of 2026. In future, the Federal Council wants to enshrine them in the revised Electricity Supply Act, which is currently pending in parliament.

In view of the time-consuming project work, the federal government should have funds available to cover the costs of preliminary work, as the national government announced on Wednesday. This is in case the revision of the Electricity Supply Act does not succeed.
