The Federal Council, together with the cantons and social partners, has warned against the popular initiative "No Switzerland of 10 million". The proposal would jeopardize Switzerland's prosperity, security and humanitarian tradition.
On Monday in Bern, Federal Councillor Beat Jans warned against the associated termination of the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons with the EU. He appeared together with representatives of the cantons, employers and trade unions.
An end to the free movement of persons would jeopardize the bilateral approach and exacerbate staff shortages. Participation in the Schengen and Dublin agreements would also be threatened. The police would lose access to search databases. In addition, Switzerland would have to expect more asylum applications and costs in the hundreds of millions.
