"I am delighted that we were able to coordinate this meeting," Saar told the Federal Councillor after greeting him with a warm embrace. No further statements were initially made.

Mr Cassis would like to discuss the concerns of humanitarian aid workers in the Gaza Strip with his counterpart. On Tuesday evening, shortly after his arrival in Israel, the Swiss Foreign Minister met with representatives of several organizations working in the area.

On Wednesday, the Federal Councillor first discussed with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa a possible future role for the Palestinian Authority in the preparations for the conference on a two-state solution planned for next week in New York. The Palestinians hope that the meeting will lead to a clear commitment from the international community to bring this scenario back into the discussion.

"For Switzerland, the issue of recognizing Palestine is at the end of a credible political process leading to a two-state solution," said Nicolas Bideau, spokesperson for the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), to a Keystone-SDA journalist on the ground after the meeting. This credibility is based on lasting peace and guarantees for the development and security of Israel and Palestine. The Palestinians also wanted to convince the USA that a two-state solution would be beneficial for all parties involved.
