After the "no" to highway expansions and additional costs for future rail infrastructure, the federal government must set priorities for road and rail expansion. The Department of Transport has therefore commissioned ETH Zurich to carry out a review.

To date, Parliament has approved around CHF 16 billion for infrastructure expansions for the 2035 rail expansion phase. In November 2024, it was announced that the expansion step would cost an additional CHF 14 billion. And also in November, voters said no to six highway expansion projects.

The Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) is therefore having the planned infrastructure projects for road and rail reviewed, as it announced on Tuesday. The aim is to examine which projects have priority and which could possibly be postponed.

The projects cannot be implemented as planned, the Uvek wrote. ETH Zurich will carry out the review and prioritization; results should be available in the third quarter of 2025.
