Immunologist Fred Ramsdell only found out about his Nobel Prize in Medicine hours later - while hiking. Ramsdell was currently enjoying life and could not be reached due to a hike, his San Francisco-based laboratory Sonoma Biotherapeutics had initially announced.

When the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm announced on Monday that Ramsdell and his colleagues Shimon Sakaguchi (Japan) and Mary Brunkow (also USA) would receive the award in December, it was still the middle of the night on the US West Coast.
Only reached in the evening during a hike
In the evening, however, the head of the laboratory managed to reach Ramsdell, his spokeswoman told the German Press Agency. The researcher had ended his hike early and was now on his way home.
According to the Nobel Committee, the findings of Ramsdell, Sakaguchi and Brunkow provided the basis for the development of possible future treatment methods for cancer and autoimmune diseases, for example. The most important award for physicians is endowed with 11 million Swedish kronor (around one million euros).
Further prize winners to be named
The winners of the physics prize will be named on Tuesday, followed by the chemistry prize on Wednesday, then the prizes for literature and peace, and finally the so-called Nobel Prize for Economics, sponsored by the Swedish Central Bank, next Monday. The ceremonial presentation of all awards traditionally takes place on December 10, the anniversary of the death of prize donor Alfred Nobel (1833-1896).
