A barn owl has been rescued from the chimney of a residential building in Lower Saxony. The tenants of an apartment discovered the animal in a chimney pipe on Saturday when they went to investigate scratching noises, as the local fire department reported on Sunday.
As the owl was close to a maintenance flap, the emergency services managed to free the animal.
The owl, which was uninjured but somewhat exhausted, was handed over to professionals to be nursed back to health and later released back into the wild. The barn owl is strictly protected in Germany.
