The authorities are giving the all-clear for the forest fire not far from the US West Coast metropolis of Los Angeles. On Saturday, "significant progress" was made in extinguishing the fire, according to the fire protection authority Cal Fire. The "Canyon Fire" is now 47 percent contained. All people in the area are allowed to return to their homes, it said.

Damage assessment teams have inspected most of the burned area, which covers almost 22 square kilometers. Two residential houses and five uninhabited buildings had been destroyed. On Sunday night (local time), emergency teams were still on the move to secure residential areas and extinguish any remaining pockets of fire.
Temperatures remain high
However, the risk of fires in the region remains high. According to the US weather service, temperatures are expected to reach around 36 degrees on Sunday. Heat alone does not cause wildfires, but high temperatures combined with dryness, low humidity and wind can increase the risk. "Avoid anything that could cause sparks", warned the weather service on Platform X.
The "Canyon Fire" broke out on Thursday for unknown reasons around 60 kilometers northwest of Los Angeles. The flames initially spread explosively. Thousands of people had to leave their homes immediately. It brought back memories of the devastating fires in January, when two wildfires left a trail of devastation in parts of Los Angeles, killing at least 31 people.
