Two large fires on Crete and in the greater Athens area have been brought under control by the Greek fire department with the help of fire-fighting aircraft and helicopters. However, there is no reason to sound the all-clear: strong winds could turn even the smallest fire into a major blaze at any time, the fire department explained.

Heatwave ahead

According to the meteorological office, a heatwave is set to hit south-eastern Europe in the coming days. According to weather experts, temperatures of around 40 degrees are expected from Saturday until next Wednesday - especially in urban areas. On the islands and on the coasts of Greece, it is expected to be three to five degrees cooler thanks to the sea breeze, said a meteorologist on Greek radio ERTnews.
