According to the meteorological services of both countries, the heatwave will last at least until Sunday. Already in the morning hours of Thursday, local temperatures climbed to around 36 degrees.
Temperatures rise to up to 42 degrees
In northern and central Greece, night-time temperatures will not fall below 30 degrees, according to the weather office in Athens. Meteorologists expect the peak on Friday: in many regions, temperatures are expected to rise to 42 degrees.
The Meteorological Office of Cyprus has issued a heat warning for today and until Sunday - temperatures of up to 41 degrees are expected.
Advice from doctors
In Athens, Nicosia and other major cities, the authorities have opened numerous air-conditioned halls. People who do not have air conditioning at home can spend the hot hours of the day there. Doctors advise people to wear light-colored clothing, stay in the shade if possible and drink plenty of water. This applies in particular to the elderly, sick people and young children.
High risk of forest fires
Civil defense warns of the high risk of large forest and bush fires due to the weather. The combination of drought, heat and winds can turn the smallest flame into a major fire within minutes, according to the fire department.
