This is the first time that a pack of wolves has been confirmed in the canton of Obwalden, according to a press release on Wednesday. The canton had already reported a female wolf and a wolf in this area in February.
After several months without any new evidence, a recent survey by the wildlife authorities has now revealed that at least two adult animals and one young wolf make up the new "Klein-Melchtal pack". According to the communiqué, it is still unclear whether the fourth animal is another young wolf or an adult.
According to the scientific definition, a pack is considered to be established when at least three wolves are observed together. The University of Lausanne is currently examining DNA samples to clarify the origin and relationship. The canton is calling on livestock farmers to protect their animals well. Wolf sightings should be reported to the cantonal wildlife authority.
