A fisherman in the Adriatic country of Montenegro has caught and then released a great white shark, according to marine biologists. The fisherman, Gojko Mitrovic, submitted a photo of the very rare sea dweller in the Adriatic to the Institute of Marine Biology in the Montenegrin coastal town of Kotor, as the institute reported on its Facebook page.
According to this information, the unusual catch was made on Monday 12 kilometers from the coast and at a depth of 115 meters. It was a young animal. The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) enters the Mediterranean naturally, but is rare in the Adriatic. The species is considered threatened with extinction.
The last time a young great white shark was caught in the Adriatic was in Croatia in 2023. However, the fishermen treated it like any other catch and sold the animal to a fish restaurant.
