The Zurich High Court has dispensed the 64-year-old Italian driver who allegedly caused a serious accident in Zurich in December 2018 from the trial on Friday. Two people died in the accident.

As the presiding judge announced at the start of the trial on Friday, the accused, who lives in Italy, was excused from the trial for health reasons. He had already been absent from the trial at Zurich District Court last year.

At that time, the district court sentenced him to a conditional prison sentence of 24 months for multiple involuntary manslaughter. According to his defense lawyer, however, the driver could not be held responsible for the deaths of the two people. He should therefore only be sentenced to a fine for traffic offenses. The public prosecutor's office, on the other hand, requested that the first-instance verdict be confirmed.
