After days of rainfall in Hawaii, which led to flooding in many places, the authorities have ordered evacuations on the island of Oahu.

According to the emergency operations center, the water level at the Wahiawa Dam has reached a critical level. Should the dam break, there was a risk of life-threatening flooding. More than 4,000 residents are affected in the region in the north of the island, a spokeswoman told US broadcaster CNN. The north coast of Oahu is known as a surfer's paradise.

The governor of the Pacific island group of Hawaii, Josh Green, called on the population to follow the evacuation instructions. Green said in a video message that the heavy rain had caused such severe flooding that the high water was reaching up to his chest in places. The National Guard and Coast Guard would be on standby to assist.

The heavy rain had flooded entire streets in the past few days, residential areas were submerged in water and houses were destroyed. Some people trapped by the floods had to be rescued by emergency services.
