Grey in the lowlands, sunny in the mountains: the last month of the year was characterized by fog. On the Central Plateau, the sun shone for no more than ten hours in some places in December.

Fog and high fog persisted in the first three weeks of December. It rarely lifted below 800 meters, which is why there was little sunshine at low altitudes on the Central Plateau. In Schaffhausen, there were just 2.2 hours of sunshine between December 1 and 22.
According to the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss), there was all the more sunshine above the fog line. For example on the Napf and the Säntis. Compared to the weather in earlier December, the Central Plateau had the least sunshine.
According to the MeteoSwiss weather report, the persistent high-pressure weather meant that there was hardly any significant precipitation throughout Switzerland in the first two thirds of December. The national average temperature in December was 0.8 degrees.
