The massive forest fires in Canada are increasingly affecting air quality in parts of North America.

Smoke from more than 200 active fires - over 100 of which are out of control - has reached at least a third of the United States, according to the US weather authorities. The north-east of the USA and the Midwest are particularly affected. The air was at its worst on Thursday in the metropolis of Chicago.

Air quality warnings were issued in the US states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Minnesota, Wisconsin and other states, and the view of the New York skyline, among others, was clouded. In cities such as Boston and even in northern Florida, the smoke led to noticeable restrictions in everyday life for sensitive groups such as the elderly and asthmatics.

In Canada itself, the population also suffers from polluted air. In provinces such as Manitoba and Saskatchewan, which are experiencing a particularly high number of fires, nationwide warnings are in place. A state of emergency is in force in both provinces. Around 30,000 people have been evacuated there.
