In the northern French city of Amiens, a disused hotel in the city center has suddenly collapsed. Rescue workers are searching the rubble for possible victims.
It is still unclear whether there were any people in the building, reported the newspaper "Le Courrier Picard" from the scene of the collapse.
Photos showed the completely collapsed building as well as large amounts of rubble and debris that had slid onto the road. The police cordoned off the scene of the accident and evacuated surrounding buildings. According to the newspaper, the collapse occurred at around 12 noon. A gas leak was cited as a possible cause.
Older buildings in large cities in France collapse time and again. Two years ago, two people were killed in the collapse of a multi-storey building in the center of Paris after a devastating explosion. Leaking gas was probably the cause. Also two years ago, eight people died in Marseille when two adjacent buildings collapsed. In Lille in northern France, a man was killed at the end of 2022 when a building collapsed in the city center.
