Studer was Chairman of the SBG Executive Board from 1988. He chaired the SBG Board of Directors from 1996 until the merger with Swiss Bank Corporation to form today's UBS in 1998. In total, he worked for the bank for over four decades, according to the obituary.

Studer was regarded as an old-school banker. The son of a cheese maker had become the most powerful banker in Switzerland, according to a media report on his departure.

He became known to the general public in the 1990s, when the Swiss banks and he personally were under pressure due to the dormant assets affair.
