Four tons of cocaine have been seized from a freighter off the coast of the Canary Islands. The 70-meter-long ship "Ras", sailing under the Tanzanian flag, was intercepted 130 nautical miles from Lanzarote, the police said.

The entire crew of the ship had been arrested. Five crew members had Turkish citizenship, two had Azerbaijani citizenship and one had Dutch citizenship, the authorities added.

The freighter had attracted attention because it had made a "unique voyage" from Turkey to West Africa without loading or unloading any goods, it added. After "unpredictable maneuvers", it had sailed towards the Iberian Peninsula. The freighter was inspected by French and Spanish customs vessels.
